Conclution of Research

Deltas are vital features on the earth, they have very diverse ecosystems which are unique and important for the habitat of plants and animals along with the production of resources. In the case of the Mekong River Delta this land has been used in various ways over a number of years. The main land use of this area has significantly changed from 1989 to 2009. Where there was once a dense population of mangrove and rice fields the change in demand has meant that many fields have been converted into shrimp pods. This change has resulted in the increase vulnerably of flooding and other environmental factors.

Summary

GIS and Remote Sensing has been used throughout the website to illustrate many things. It has been used in particular to illustrate land use of the Mekong River Delta in 1989 and also 2009. It played a key role in examining and interpreting particular land use. The systems used provided methods of image processing meaning it was easy to display information in a clear fashion and interpretation of the data could then be done much quicker. The images used helped with information processing as it allowed for a visual representation of what was being discussed in the text. Through the use of these systems data was manipulated to show specific details and previously un-noticed features. Processing data was efficient and rapid which would not not have been the case without the use GIS and Remote Sensing.

What Went Wrong?

Overall the maps used throughout the website where what was originally planned however when acquiring data some problems occurred. Data was originally downloaded via the GLOVIS website but when the layers where stacked the images presented lines which blurred the image (as represented in the images to the left). On investigation it was found that at that time period, 2003, there was a satellite error which resulted in these images with lines across. Due to this it was decided that data would be downloaded again from the GCLF website. This however took up a large portion of time along with further delays of the GCLF website not working on certain days which resulted in a time set back.
